A driver and a passenger were injured after the driver fell asleep at the wheel Friday morning on I-57/70 near Effingham mile marker 162.
According to the Illinois State Police, Emmanuel Chapman, 23, of Troy, MI, was driving a White, 17, Freightliner box truck east bound on I-57/70 when he stated that he fell asleep.
He allegedly left the south side of the roadway striking the guardrail, crossing the center lanes of traffic leaving the north side of the roadway striking the concrete median barrier and stopped in the middle lane of traffic, according to a press release from the Illinois State Police.
The passenger of the vehicle, Michael Howd, 36, of Flint, MI, was transported to St. Anthony Memorial Hospital in Effingham.
Chapman was charged with improper lane usage, driving a commercial vehicle while fatigued, possession of cannabis while in a
commercial vehicle and DUI drugs and possession of cannabis, according to the press release.
