(Washington, DC) — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning people who take medication for type 2 diabetes that some medication is being linked to a serious genital infection. The FDA said that there was one death and 11 others have been hospitalized due to the issue. The drugs are called SGLT2 inhibitors and help lower blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. The risk is a very rare bacterial infection called Fournier’s gangrene. It usually enters the body through a cut and quickly spreads. There has only been 12 cases identified from March 2013 to May 2018.
