(Columbia, SC) — The Democratic nominee for governor in South Carolina is being called to serve with the National Guard as Hurricane Florence approaches. State Representative James Smith is a major in the South Carolina National Guard and is one of about 18-hundred troops being called into active duty ahead of the storm. Smith and incumbent Governor Henry McMaster have suspended their campaigns because of the category four hurricane. Florence is expected to hit the Carolina coastline Friday.
