Weekly Jobless Claims Soar To Record 3,283,000
(Undated) — Far more Americans than ever before are filing first-time claims for unemployment benefits. Nearly three-point-three million workers filed initial claims last week as the coronavirus pandemic shuts down much of the nation’s economy. That’s nearly five times as many as the previous record of just under 700-thousand, set in October of 1982. States with the biggest increases in claims were California, Washington, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts. The steepest declines in claims were in Arkansas, Alabama, Puerto Rico, West Virginia, and Maine.
