California Governor Announces Schools Will Not Reopen Due to COVID-19

(Sacramento, CA) — California Governor Gavin Newsom says that “schools will not reopen but classes are in.” Speaking in Sacramento, Newsom said it’s “self-evident” that children will not be going back to their physical school setting anytime soon. He announced that Google is “stepping up in a big way” by adding 100-thousand new points of access to improve Wi-Fi and broadband capacity. Google will also provide a minimum of three months free to families across the state as well as thousands of Chrome Book laptops.

Newsom also added that he has deep respect and empathy for parents, especially mothers, during this challenging time. Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond says it is important that all California schools “maximize their efforts around distanced learning” because it is unclear when students can return to campus.
