Church Appeals Ruling On Stay-At-Home Order
(Springfield, IL) — A northwest Illinois church says it is appealing a federal judge’s ruling that upheld Governor J.B. Pritzker’s stay-at-home order. A judge ruled Sunday against a petition by Beloved Church and its pastor Stephen Cassell. The petition argued that the stay-at-home order violated their First Amendment right to hold in-person church services with a large number of people. The Thomas More Society that represents the church complained yesterday that the ten person limit singled out churches. The judge in the case ruled that the public interest in preventing the spread of coronavirus outweighed the church’s right to free public assembly for worship.
