A press conference to educate the public on the new smoke law will be held Wednesday, October 21, 2020, at noon at Charleston Fire Station #2.
The new law requires smoke detectors with a 10-year sealed battery to be installed in all dwellings which were either built before 1988 or those which don’t already have hardwired smoke detectors. Chief Steve Bennett will be joined by Illinois Fire Safety Alliance Executive Director Phil Zaleski, Illinois Firefighters Association Government Affairs Director Margaret Vaughn, and the Office of the State Fire Marshal. Chief Bennett will offer information on First Alert’s donation of detectors and installation kits to help Charleston residents.
