Former Illinois Supreme Court Chief Justice James Heiple Dies
(Peoria, IL) — Former Illinois Supreme Court Chief Justice James Heiple is dead following complications from a brain hemorrhage. Heiple died Monday at the age of 87. The Peoria native served on the Court for ten years, starting in 1990. He became Chief Justice in 1997 and stepped down in 2000. Heiple wrote the controversial 1994 opinion that sent “Baby Richard” Daniel Kirchner back to his biological parents. The boy’s father had contested his adoption, saying he wasn’t informed of Kirchner’s existence until months after the mother had relinquished her rights in 1991.
