Thursday, June 10, 2021, Ed Dowd, Executive Director of the Mattoon Chamber of Commerce was a guest on 101.3 WMCI. Here is a brief description of what he covered during the interview:
- A Big Win for Small Business– The big box retailers including Home Depot, Lowes and Best Buy have been putting small business service providers including Card’s Appliance and Broadway Appliance at a competitive disadvantage for many years. They were not required to charge sales tax to their customers when installing any appliances. Our local dealers had to charge the sales tax which made it harder to win and keep customers. Just last month the Illinois Circuit Court finally ruled against Lowe’s in a lawsuit which will force all the big box chains to even the playing field and start charging the sales tax for services.
- A Big Day Tomorrow- The State will eliminate all COVID-19 related restrictions on businesses starting Friday by moving into Phase 5 of the Restore Illinois Plan. All businesses, schools, and recreation activities can resume with no restrictions. Conventions, sporting events and festivals can go on with no capacity limits. Please remember that some businesses including health care providers will still require safety protocols so be kind, considerate and mindful that they are trying to protect their customers, clients and employees.
