Maintenance Professional Credited With Initiating Residents Evacuation Before Explosion
(Urbana, IL) — A U of I maintenance professional is being credited with initiating the evacuation of Hendrick House minutes before it exploded. An employee at Hendrick House says an RA called Jayvon Thomas after noticing a gas-like smell. Thomas found that the boiler in the maintenance room was the source, and immediately started the evacuation of over 50 students from the building. The boiler exploded less the five minutes later, but no one was injured.
