Recreation Areas Closed (Lake Shelbyville Area)
Several recreation areas around Lake Shelbyville will be closed Thursday through Sunday (11/18-21) for the Deer Hunt for People with Disabilities. Lone Point and Lithia Springs Campgrounds and all of Sullivan Beach, Wilborn Creek, Coon Creek and Opossum Creek recreation areas will be closed to automobile and pedestrian traffic from 2:00 p.m. Thursday until 7:00 p.m. Sunday. The temporary closing also includes boat ramps within Wilborn Creek, Coon Creek and Opossum Creek recreation areas.
FISH Parking Lot Giveaway
FISH of Effingham County will have another parking lot giveaway this Saturday (11/20) starting at 9:00 am. Everything is free, and open to the public: toys, Christmas décor, coats, gloves, hats, and much more. Come help yourself.
Altamont Lutheran Interparish School Holiday Bazaar
Altamont Lutheran Interparish School will host its 14th annual holiday bazaar this Saturday (11/20) from 9:00 am. to 3:00 pm. Crafters and vendors will be there with lots of great Christmas gift ideas. Find more info at their Facebook page.
Effingham County FISH Thanksgiving Dinner
Effingham County FISH is sponsoring the 17th annual free Thanksgiving Day dinner for Effingham County residents. Meals will either be delivered or available for pick up. Delivery will be between 10:00 am. and noon, or you can pick up at Cornerstone Christian Church from 11:00 to noon. To reserve meals, please call the senior center at 217-347-5569 by noon on Monday (11/22). Volunteers are also needed to help package and deliver meals. Mattoon Arts Council’s Holiday Artisan Market
The Mattoon Arts Council’s Holiday Artisan Market will be at the Burgess-Osborne Auditorium on November 27th from 9:00-2:00. Several handmade items will be available for purchase. You can get more information at mattoonartscouncil.org.
Benefit Soup Supper for Jayme Ballinger
A benefit soup supper for Jayme Ballinger will be held at the Shelbyville VFW on December 4th starting at 4:00 pm. A live auction will follow the meal. If you have an item you’d like to donate, please call Sarah at 217-343-8073.
Santa Breakfast at Effingham High School
Santa will be back for breakfast at Effingham High School’s Hearts Rock Café on December 4th from 7:00-11:00 am. Snowman pancakes and sausage will be served. Adult meals are $6 and kids 12 and under eat for $4. The Santa Shoppe will also be open with lots of great Christmas gift ideas. Proceeds benefit the Unit 40 Education Foundation.
Toledo’s Hometown Christmas
Toledo’s Hometown Lighted Christmas Parade and Hometown Christmas around the Square will be held on December 4th. Businesses will be offering special deals, they’ll have live music, vendors, concessions, trolley rides, scavenger hunt, the tree lighting ceremony and Santa will be there! For the parade, all types of vehicles are welcome: cars, trucks, tractors, side-by-sides, golf carts, etc. Just make sure it’s illuminated and reflects the Christmas theme. Cash prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place. No registration is required. Just show up at 5:30 at the Calvary Tabernacle Pentecostal Church.
Effingham Public Library Book Sale
A two-day book sale will be held at the Effingham Public Library on December 3rd from 9:00-2:00 and December 4th from 9:00 to noon. The sale will offer a wide variety of new, gently used and vintage books. A special section of Christmas titles will also be available. They’ll also have a big selection of DVDs, CDs and audiobooks.
