Full Worm Moon, Winter’s Final Full Moon, Rises Tonight

(Undated) — The final full moon of winter, known as the worm moon, rises tonight. The worm moon will be brightest shortly after 3 a.m. Eastern Time on Friday, but it will appear nearly full as it rises tonight and Friday thanks to what’s called moon illusion. That means the moon looks bigger at the horizon than it does high in the sky. Native Americans call it the worm moon because in cold climates the ground thaws and earthworms appear. In Christianity it’s called the Lenten moon because, this year, it appears before the spring equinox, which is Sunday.
