The Mattoon Fire Department will begin flow testing and painting fire hydrants starting next week (6/20). Work will be done between the hours of 8am and 3pm. Any landscaping within 3 feet of the hydrant that obstructs the view or operation of the hydrant will be trimmed or removed. Hydrant flushing may cause discoloration of your household water in or near the areas being tested, but water is completely safe to drink. However, if you plan on doing laundry, let the water run until it clears up.
