Mattoon captured the first game in the home-and-home baseball series over Effingham, 4-3 Wednesday night. Freshman left-hander Owen Nolte tossed a complete game five-hitter to earn the win. Nolte walked two and fanned six in a strong outing. Brendan Prince reached base four times for the Greenwave with two singles, a walk, and a hit by pitch. Matt Miller had a single, double, and a run batted in. Jackson Horst drove in what proved to be the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Rylan Farmer drew a two-out walk. Prince was hit by a pitch on a 1-2 count. Horst’s sharp single through the left side of the infield plated Farmer. Brayden Tucker had a single, triple, and two runs batted in for Effingham. Jude Traub had two doubles and a walk. Mattoon (4-17, 2-7 in the Apollo) will play at Effingham (14-9, 5-4) Thursday in the second game of the series.
