The Edgar County Coroner has released the grim details of a fatal car accident that claimed the life of a Brocton woman last Sunday evening on Illinois Highway 49.
The crash happened around 8:43 p.m. Sunday, roughly two and a half miles south of Brocton. According to Coroner Scott Barrett, a southbound 2013 Toyota Prius carrying three occupants struck a deer. The force of that impact launched the deer into the oncoming northbound 2012 GMC Acadia and went right through the vehicle’s windshield. The driver of the Acadia has been identified as 36-year-old Heidi N. Rothermel of Brocton, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her vehicle traveled a short distance before coming to a stop in a field just off of the road.
All three occupants of the Toyota Prius were uninjured and declined medical treatment at the scene. Rothermel was the only occupant of her vehicle.
The Edgar County Sheriff’s Department, Oakland Ambulance, Brocton Fire Department, and Illinois State Police all responded to the scene.
