A 63 year old man is recovering from non-life threatening injuries after a grain bin ordeal in Douglas County this morning. The rescue effort required a multi-agency response and rescue operation to get him out safely.
The Camargo Countryside Fire Protection District says crews were called to a grain bin rescue at 1725 East County Road 600 North just after 8 a.m. today. When first responders arrived, they found the man trapped inside a bin of corn. Getting someone out of that situation is dangerous and often deadly. Grain entrapment is one of the most dangerous agriculture related emergencies responders face, as the weight and pressure of the grain can make it nearly impossible for a person to free themselves.
Technical Rescue Teams from the Charleston Fire Department, the Arthur Fire Protection District Grain Bin Rescue Team, and the Urbana Fire Department led the rescue effort. Support came from a long list of agencies around the immediate area.
This grain bin rescue comes about after a young man in Southern Illinois died during a very similar incident. Steven Haase, just 21 when he passed, found himself stuck in a bin filled with corn in Wabash County on Monday.
