Illinois State Police are asking for the public’s help after human remains were discovered in Lake Mattoon Sunday evening.
According to ISP, boaters on Lake Mattoon spotted part of a human arm on the evening of June 28th, 2026. The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department requested that the Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigations Zone 8 take over the investigation following the initial call.
Investigators have identified two distinct tattoos on the arm that they hope will help identify the man. One is a tattoo of a skeleton holding a Green Bay Packers helmet. The other appears to depict an unknown letter or number but is particular enough that it might help family or friends recognize their lost loved one.
