Peterson Park will play host to the Coles County Relay For Life’s “Harvest for a Cure” event on Saturday, August 22nd, from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m.. The afternoon should bring local families, cancer survivors, and supporters to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Those that come will enjoy live entertainment, family activities, and various ceremonies honoring those impacted by cancer. Behind only heart disease, cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, this Relay For Life is a direct way to support local survivors and fund critical research.
Beginning at 3:00 p.m., there will be live music from Jake & Mikayla to go alongside a silent auction that will run until 7:30 PM. A dedicated ‘Survivor Reception’ takes place from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m., while the Sarah Bush Lincoln “Foam Party” goes from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.. Food trucks and craft vendors will be open across the park throughout the afternoon and early evening.
Opening ceremonies begin at 5:00 p.m. with the Mattoon High School Color Guard, the National Anthem, a prayer from Pastor Paul Weber, and survivor speaker Melissa Shain. The Survivor Lap then follows at 5:30 p.m., leading into performances by the Mattoon Academy of Gymnastics at 5:50 p.m., the Mattoon Police Department vs. Mattoon Fire Department ‘Guns vs. Hoses’ softball game begins at 6:00 p.m., Kick Champions Taekwondo at 6:15 p.m., and music from Doty & Dexter from 6:45 to 8:00 p.m.. The event starts wrapping up at 8:00 p.m. with the “Luminaria” and “Garden of Hope” Ceremony.
