On Thursday, Coles-Moultrie Electric Cooperative officially unveiled their plans to build a new company headquarters and large warehouse to the public! Located at 5755 Development Drive, which sits within Coles Business Park between Mattoon and Charleston, this project spans 24 acres and will serve as the ‘hub’ of their operations.
In front of over 100 people in attendance, Coles-Moultrie leadership laid out how the plan came together to move from their Dewitt Ave. location. Starting in November of last year, plans began to swirl for expanding the company’s footprint while keeping the headquarters and more, here in Coles County. Coles-Moultrie Electric has sought out the services of Akra Builders as their general contractors, a local outfit out of Teutopolis, Illinois. This process wasn’t necessarily simple… but one that came together within a year’s time thanks to collaboration and hard work from the Board of Directors on down.
It was mentioned during the groundbreaking that the currently occupied Coles-Moultrie Electric Cooperative building was built in 1955. As far as we know, this building has always been in the hands of Coles-Moultrie but it may not be that way forever. When asked about what would happen with the location, it does not sound like the company plans to continue operating in any way out of it. Instead, it seems more likely that the commercial building would be sold or placed for rent. This was not an official statement.
When will Coles-Moultrie likely have this new headquarters and “campus” built? The hope is that by the end of 2027, all operations will begin using the new space. Keep in mind, a lot has to go right for this timeline to come to fruition but at the latest, it’s likely the project will be completed by Spring 2028.
Congratulations to Coles-Moultrie Electric Cooperative on this exciting news! Any investment in Coles County is worth celebrating and a real benefit to the community.
