EIU Homecoming Week got its start last night as new royalty was crowned in the Grand Ballroom of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union, kicking off a week themed “Lights, Camera, Panthers!” From there, the schedule only picks up for Eastern Illinois… packing in everything from a campus-wide food drive to Saturday’s homecoming parade/football game.
Students and staff have a full slate to look forward to. Tonight, a lip sync battle called “Hollywood Hitmakers” takes over the Grand Ballroom from 6 to 8 p.m., open to both individual students and registered student organizations. Wednesday brings the annual Faculty and Staff “Blue-B-Que” to the Doudna Concourse from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed that evening by a quad party dubbed “Pantherchella,” running 4 to 7 p.m. with music, food trucks, and earplugs on hand for anyone sensitive to noise. Interim Director of the Office of Leadership and Engagement Catie Danner said the goal is to make sure everyone on campus has a reason to get involved. “Our goal is to find something for everyone,” Danner said. “We want to create more spirit on campus not only with the students, but also the faculty and staff in different departments.”
Beyond the parties, the week carries a charitable thread, too. EIU is aiming to collect 1,000 pounds of food for the campus pantry before the week wraps up, with drop-off points available at the pantry itself, at the “Blue-B-Que” for an extra raffle entry, and at the Charleston County Market. Departments and student groups are also competing to design the best spirit banner, with entries displayed along the baseball field fence throughout the week.
Thursday night, the Panther Gala rolls out a blue carpet in the Union’s ‘University Ballroom’ from 7 to 10 p.m., modeled after New York’s Met Gala. Friday shifts to recognition, with an awards reception and dinner starting at 6 p.m. honoring Alumni Award winners, Heritage Society members, and the Burnham and Nancy Neal Outstanding Philanthropist Award, alongside a 50th reunion celebration for the Class of 1976. The energy picks back up that night with a student pep rally at O’Brien Stadium at 7 p.m.
It all builds to Saturday, when more than 100 campus and community groups march through town for the homecoming parade starting at 9:30 a.m. A tailgate follows at 11 a.m. near O’Brien Stadium featuring live music from Shadoobee, a band formed by EIU alums back in the 1980s, before the Panthers take on Southeast Missouri State at 2 p.m. at O’Brien Field. EIU dropped its last meeting with SEMO in 2025, 42-13. Happy Homecoming Week Panthers!
